Bukit Lawang, a small village in the middle of the jungle of Northern Sumatra. Well known by tourists for its trekking’s to meet the orangutans. But what about local life? What kind of people live in the surrounding villages? What do people do if they don’t work in tourism? How does a rural Sumatran lifestyle and landscape look like? Together with Trek Sumatra we explored the Bukit Lawang’s surroundings.

We drove through rice paddies, cacao plantations, -sadly enough- endless palm oil plantations and colorful rural villages full of smiling and waving children. We swam in an emerald green jungle river with gibbons jumping from palm tree to palm tree next to us and enjoyed a classic nasi goreng in a small warung.
