Today is our first day in Sri Lanka, we arrive at night and don’t see much of the surroundings. But this morning the sun is shining hot and bright. We are in Negombo the closest beach spot to the airport. Negombo has wide yellow sand beaches lined up with endless palm trees. Negombo’s main street is pretty touristic but has quite a view nice restaurants. It’s February, full on summer, peak surf season and two of our best friends fly in tomorrow. You should think that’s all you need for an ultimate trip. But there is more. Les and I couldn’t be more happy with the place we bring our two friends to tomorrow after picking them up from Colombo International: Waterland Villa’s.
The villa’s are situated just a 5-minute tuk tuk drive out of the Negombo tourist centre. Getting out of the tourist zone you’ll find yourself in true, authentic Sri Lanka. Women in colourful Sari’s with umbrellas against the sun walk slowly over the orange sand paths. We drive past small rotti shops and bright pink tropical flower bushes are hanging over the road. When we drive up the property of the Waterland Villa’s we are super excited. The property is situated at the waterfront of the Maha Oya River and the 17th Century Dutch Canal. We immediately feel at home. The shores of the rivers are filled up with sky high coconut trees and colourful flowers. We are warmly welcomed by the Waterland staff and get a refreshing welcome drink. There are four villa’s and the last one -the biggest with two levels- the family villa, is ours. I slowly walk through the spacious, light, glass villa. Everything is super fresh and clean, a bathroom with waterfall shower I immediately want to jump under and a bed so big and fine. I drop myself on it and want to dream right away. I hear a plunge and hard laughter outside; I walk to the roof terrace to see what’s going on. Leslie just jumped into our private triangle infinity pool. A feeling of total happiness takes me over. Sometimes everything falls together at the right moment, that moment is now.
