Mazunte is a sleepy beach town on the coastline of Oaxaca that has a real hippie vibe to it. The town’s main street, Avenida Paseo del Mazunte is full of small tribal shops, healthy smoothie bars and taco eateries. The only activity is hanging on the beach, zipping a coconut, reading a book and just be lazy. Around the clock of 17:00 everyone gathers to walk up to Punta Cometa. A walk of 20 minutes to the best viewpoint for sunset. You walk over a rocky road through an Alice in wonderland scenery, along deserted bays with private beaches and a natural salt-water pool that fills up every time the waves come rolling in. On your way back make sure to dine at our favorite restaurant in town Estrella Fugaz, owned by the super friendly Gustavo. Everyone in town greets each other friendly and knows one another by name, and we feel immediately at home. The open restaurant has a beautiful sea view and a delicious menu, definitely try out the tuna steak and one of the cocktails. Get yourself a healthy smoothie and pancakes in the morning for a great start of the day.
Where to Sleep
ZOA hotel delivers on tranquility and privacy. The hotel is built on a hill and blends in with nature beautifully. There are only five cabins, which gives you the feeling you have the place to yourself. You can fill your days with yoga, massages, relaxing on your private beach, marvel at te view from the infinity pool and watch movies at ZOA’s outside movie theatre. But be careful, you might never want to leave this place.
Zipolite
Zipolite is about as far away from your typical touristy Mexican beach town as you can get. It’s a haven for hippies and nudists (it’s Mexico’s only nudist beach). The town consists of one main street parallel to the beach with shops on both sides. It makes for a pleasant atmosphere where it’s easy to pass by friends, or to make new friends. I enjoyed its bohemian vibe, relaxed energy, and the stunning golden light. You can find a very happy, easygoing crowd here. For a delicious Italian dinner pop into Posado Mexico. At this casual place that overlooks the beach you can enjoy dishes that are inspired by the owner’s Italian mother. You can find some Mexican dishes on the innovative menu as well. Definitely try the fresh seafood pasta, or shrimps.
