Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. During colonial time Shimla was the summer capital of British India. The city is situated in the southern part of the Himalayas. Set along a 12km ridge, with sloping forested hills falling away in every direction, you get a fling of the feeling of being at the roof of the world. Shimla is especially a popular destination for Indians. During the peak season from March to end of June the hill town is buzzing with a happy flow of local vacationers.
Getting around
The centre is the main square with large white church and outlook post. On a clear day a toothed line of snowy peaks is clearly visible from here. For the most part of the day the square is filled with tourists taking snaps and children riding around on one of the horses waiting in line to be booked. The long, main street; the Mall is full of souvenir shops, bakeries, restaurants and small tourist agencies. The road runs from east to west of town just below the spine of the hill. Our favourite spot on the Mall is Café Simla Times. A perfect hang out during sunny days to marvel at the splendid views and enjoy a cocktail and live music in the evening. Traffic is banned from the centre part of town, which makes it pleasant walking around.
